CHAPTER 11

P rincess perched her tiny feet on the console between the two front seats and gazed out through the front windshield.

“It looks like three of them wore cufflinks. Shawn, Peter, and Larry.” Sonia gazed at the photograph. “It’s hard for me to imagine that any of them could have been involved in this, though.”

Princess nuzzled Sonia’s arm.

“Hi baby.” Sonia kissed the top of her head.

“Sonia, did you hear anything that day? Any kind of commotion, before you found Hank?” Nikki glanced over at her, then sped up as she approached the highway.

“I wish I did. But, no. Or maybe I just can’t remember.” Sonia shook her head. “It was such a shock to find him there like that, it was hard to put two thoughts together.”

“But you went back to the study for some reason, right?” Nikki merged onto the highway.

“Yes. I went back to the study because I thought Princess had left one of her toys in there. She is always hiding them under and behind things.” Sonia rolled her eyes.

“Did you ever find her toy?” Nikki switched lanes and checked the signs for the correct exit.

“Actually, no. In fact, I completely forgot about looking for it.” Sonia tipped her head to the side. “Come to think of it, I still haven’t found it.”

“Maybe we’ll come across it.”

“What exactly do you expect to find when we arrive?” Sonia gazed out through the window at the scenery that slipped by.

“I’m not sure yet. It might lead us to nothing, but at the moment it’s all we have. We need to find out more about Hank, then we have a chance of finding other suspects. All we need is one solid, viable suspect, and the focus will be taken off you.”

“I just don’t think that’s going to happen.” Sonia glanced over at Nikki just in time to see her wince. “I don’t mean to frustrate you, Nikki, I just don’t see how you’re going to find another suspect before the detective decides that he has enough to arrest me.”

“He hasn’t arrested you, yet.” Nikki slowed the car as she took the exit off the highway. “So, we just have to stay focused on that and hope that this will lead to something.”

“I can do that.” Sonia sighed as she looked back toward the window. “I’m so sorry I disrupted your life this way, Nikki.”

“It’s not a disruption, Sonia.” Nikki pulled into a residential street. “I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I hate to see you faced with something like this.”

“It’s not the worst I’ve ever faced.” Sonia smiled some. “There have been many things in my long life that have gone wrong, and seemed ultimately dire. But I’m still here to tell the tales.”

“Yes, you are, and you’re going to continue to be here.” Nikki felt a twinge of panic at the thought that she might not be able to find a way to protect Sonia. What if she really did have to live out the remainder of her days behind bars? The thought filled her with dread.
